Against the arrest of leaders and activists of the NLC

President Olusegun Obasano

Presidential Villa

Aso Rock

Mister President,

We wish to express herewith our indignation in the face of the acts of intimidation against leaders and activists from the Nigerian Labour Congress and the violent arrest of the NLC President, Adams Oshiomhole, on 9 October.

These acts constitute an infringement of internationally-recognised labour standards, in particular ILO Convention N°85, that your country has ratified.
We urge you, Mister President, to ensure respect for these fundamental rights.

We hope that such acts of intimidation and pressure on workers in Nigeria did not mean to present them from acting to defend the living conditions of the vast majority of the population.

Once again, we call upon you, Mister President, to use all necessary authority to ensure that such acts are not repeated.

Yours respectfully,

Guy Juquel,
Head of CGT Europe/International Department
